Product Description
Columbia Sportswear Company was founded in 1938. Columbia Sportswear Company began as a small family-owned distributorship and today Columbia is one of the world's largest outerwear companies. The history begins with Paul and Marie Lamfrom. They fled from Germany and settled in Portland, Oregon. Paul and Marie opened up a hat distributorship and named their company the Columbia Hat Company. They took the name from the nearby Columbia River. Today, their 82 year old daughter, Gert, is the Chairman of the Board and her son, Tim Boyle is President and Chief Executive Officer. Columbia Sportswear Company has a wide-range of stylish, and functional products to choose from. Columbia is famous for their Interchange System. This concept was developed in 1982 and made Columbia a leader in the outerwear industry. Columbia first started with an interchange jacket which was made for hunting and featured a weatherproof outershell with an insulating inner jacket that could be worn together or separately, thus making each parka three or four garments in one. Because of the popularity of this garment, Columbia applied the same concept to a ski parka and called it the Bugaboo™. The Bugaboo became one of the best-selling ski jackets in history. In 1991, Columbia developed a waterproof, breathable coating Omni-Tech which makes it now the second-largest user of waterproof, breathable fabric in the world.

5 out of 5 stars my best hat to date   July 8, 2009

I do a lot of walking in the sun and here in Arizona, the temperature easily gets obove 100 F in the summer. Formerly I wore a baseball cap which didn't provide much protection from the sun. I purchased this Omni-Shade Booney from a marine supply shop without putting that much thought into what I should buy. All I was looking for was something to protect me from the stifling Arizona sun. I wasn't looking for a bargin or something that would fall apart on me after a few weeks so I opted for something which wasn't too cheap nor too expensive. After wearing this, I realized I purchased a very high quality state of the art product from a reputable company (Columbia). I did a little research on this product and learned that it protects the skin from UV radiation (30 UPF) which is very good UV protection. Also, I observed that after wearing it a few times that it doesn't seem to get wet from my sweat and my sweat doesn't drip all over my face when wearing it like with other hats. I later learned that this hat has a special patented material called Omni-Dry which draws the moisture from your head/face and onto the surface of the material where it evaporates by the sun. So your face stays dry. This is particularly good for people like me who wear glasses, so you won't be bothered by sweat dripping all over your glasses.

The hat can be adjusted to fit different head sizes and has a little adjustible rope to keep it on your head in high wind. It's also very stylish looking. I've been complimented on it.

5 out of 5 stars Great summertime hat.   July 16, 2009

This hat was purchased for my middle child. Although I love the Omni-Tech Booney better, this one gives it a run for it's money. Unlike the Omni-Tech, this hat is adjustable via drawstrings to fit different sized heads. The Omni-Tech is not. Unlike the Omni-Tech though, this one does not have sides that can fasten up nor does it have a net lining that helps keep the head cool.

The sage color is great. A neutral green that is appealing and matches most of my son's clothes. Not that he cares about this though. HE would wear it regardless.

Overall though, this is a great hat. Lightweight, waterproof, and will protect the head and face from sun damage. I would recommend this item.

5 out of 5 stars Comfortable - Breathable - Adjustable   September 18, 2009

I got the Columbia Men's Booney Cap to wear on my hikes. It is very comfortable and lightweight. Most important of all, the fairly rigid wide brim helps shield both my face and neck (including the back of my neck) from the sun.

Besides being functional, this hat is very attractive-looking. Here's a list of features I really like about it:

- Adjustable Chin Strap
The chin strap works like to a draw cord so you can adjust the length of the strap with ease.

- Adjustable Hat Size
A draw cord near the inner brim of the hat helps to adjust the hat size to fit just about the head of any adult male.

- Terry Cotton Sweat Band
The inner brim on the underside of the hat is lined with a terry cotton sweat band to absorb sweat. It's a really nice touch. I don't get sweat running down my head anymore.

- Breathable
The hat is made with a very breathable material, so you head won't feel stuffy. You might also want to consider choosing a light color for the hat since lighter colors will reflect more sunlight (and heat).

- 3" Wide Brim
The 3" wide brim helps to shade my face and neck from the sun. The tag on the hat say the hat has an UPF 30. UPF is UV Rays Protection Factor, a sun protection specification for clothing analogous to SPF (Sun Protection Factor) for sunscreen.

- Waterproof
While I trying to spot-clean this hat under running tap water, I noticed that the water just beaded off the hat. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this hat is actually waterproof. As incredible as it seems, the crown of the hat can actually hold water without the fabric of the hat soaking up a single drop of water!

- Easy-To-Clean
The hat also seems to have been treated with Scotchguard, as any dirt on the hat washes off very easily.

I'm really happy with this purchase. The Columbia Men's Booney Cap not only looks great, it really helps make for a more enjoyable outdoor experience!

5 out of 5 stars Best cap I have had for direct sunlight.   July 31, 2009

UPDATE after a month wearing booney cap: WOW, it sure works beyond my expectations! I carry a hand towel on waist with a hook to my belt loop, with this cap, I use the towel very little & I'm right outside in the direct sun. The band inside really absorbs whatever little sweat I get & lets air get thru, I feel the air go thru the cap pretty good which keeps me from sweating in my hair & face & like another review from Arizona wrote, I also wear eyeglasses, I don't get any sweat around them & stay dry. NO more sweat drips on my forehead & my eyeglasses. Also, here in California we get sort of strong winds often, the string I keep hanging in front & cap has come off to my back, so the string is the perfect length to stay, I wear it hanging in front & cap will go behind head only. My wife saw this booney cap & read about it & reviews on Amazon, got it. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It's great! Cooler, lighter & wash it by hand in cold water in mins.! Got a second one. I highly recommend this cap & it's nice that one can draw the string to fit ones head size. It's a very good quality.

5 out of 5 stars Great hat for outdoors!   September 18, 2009

I previously had a Nike hat similar to this one and I had to replaced it. Reviewing the reviews I decided to go for this one and I'm glad I took this decision. This is a light weight hat, it dries real fast and also the head band feature is of real help when the heat & sun are heavy on you.

If I had to take a decision for replacing it I would buy the same one again!
